Black and White or Color?

I ask myself this more and more these days. Big prints definitely pop with good black and white. People seem to come across more interestingly in black and white. Here is an example of what I'm talking about. This was an ordinary photograph of musician Terry Hanck. But in black and white, it has more depth, something more interesting, at least to me. You notice the face, sax texture more, or maybe it's my imagination?

Here's another shot that I like in black and white. I did this as a promotional piece, but loved the black and white version. If you saw Roy Orbison's Black and White DVD, that has a feel that I love. Something going on in my head, maybe just my head, I don't know. I find myself asking will this work better in black and white in almost every image I like.

Landscapes look good in black and white. I have this big pano in my studio that's over 9 feet long, but the black and white version is in many ways more powerful. Maybe I have been looking too much at Ansel and Edward Weston?

Maybe I'm in a phase of photography that has no color, but my personal project of the Grand Dell is going to end up in black and white unless I get some color rehab! I'm getting more and more addicted to black and white, so maybe I should start wearing it? Ha! And that reminded me of a little keepsake from years ago of another person who loved black, Johnny Cash. Here is a lifetime back stage pass he gave me. Regrettably, I never used it, but it is certainly powerful for the "man in black". Thank goodness for the iphone.

There is no answer to the black and white question, but I think it is going to be a bigger part of my portfolio in the future unless I get some help.
